David Henry Primary School

Introducing Nancy Underdown

Hello,
I am Nancy Underdown and I am proud to be the Principal of David Henry School.

Not only are our grounds up-to-date and inviting, but our staff, children, Board of Trustees, and community are welcoming and caring.

We believe that all children have the right to learn and that our job is not to teach children, but to facilitate their learning. Children must be responsible for their own learning and to do this they need to make the right choices and be switched on to learning. As our staff consider themselves learners as well, we hope to positively model the skills and attributes needed to be a learner.

Our Mission Statement is “Educate Today for Tomorrow” and that is exactly what we try to do. We want to help the children develop the skills they will need to become life-long learners and to be able to contribute to the diversity of our country in future years.

We expect children to make the right choices with their behaviour and we promote the virtues that everyone has within them. Our mascot, Responsible Ruru, promotes three rules that we hope everyone at our school follows: Respect for everyone; Respect for yourself; and Responsibility for all actions.

Children are involved closely with their own learning goals and they are expected to contribute to the learning of everyone in the school.

We are a Books in Homes Duffy School and run many exciting programmes in our school such as the Primary Enterprise Programme that encourages children to set up and run their own business by manufacturing and item or providing a service. We have a well set up computer network in the school with internet and intranet capabilities in each classroom as well as in our computer suite. We provide oral language lessons for junior classes; Reading Recovery and Taped Assisted Reading Programmes; Extension groups for ICT to name just a few programmes running in the school.

If you want your child to attend a school where they will learn, expand and be happy, then I urge you to look carefully at our school.
